FRESH START: Master Bedroom refresh
When we moved into our home nearly five years ago, it was in really good shape but needed some TLC and modernizing. Between some minimal construction and design updates, we’ve slowly changed this mostly 90’s home to be more ‘us,’ and as we move into a new year, it is really refreshing to have this space refreshed.
We’re learning as we go and DIY all over this house, and everything takes longer than expected. I’m also short-to-none on before or progress photos, but it’s my goal to share these tiny but mighty changes with you in 2021, starting with our master bedroom, with a mix of high/low materials and design.
This is the first room we really did anything to, and it was this space that inspired us to re-paint the entire interior of our home, one room at a time. While the paint and woodwork for this room was completed in 2018, we just recently refreshed our bed with a new look and linens over the holidays (catching Black Friday sales!), and with just a few small changes, our master bedroom feels like a sanctuary.
The centerpiece of this room is the shiplap feature wall that frames our bed, keeping it clean and simple. This semi-DIY project was done with sheets of v-groove (or tongue-and-groove) paneling in raw MDF, which we intend to use again elsewhere in the house (eventually!). MDF is a great, affordable faux-shiplap option if you’re; (1) planning to cover it with paint; and (2) covering large spaces like walls, for it comes in 8-ft. (and larger) sheets.
Along with adding the shiplap feature wall, we painted the entire room to match (DEW 340), and re-purposed the same bedroom furniture we’ve used for years. I updated our 20-yr. old Pottery Barn headboard from it’s original antique white to a hammered black with spray paint and added new linens from Parachute Home that have changed everything about this space and made me fall in love with it all over again. And also: these sheets provide the most comfortable sleep I’ve had, ever.
The new bed linens were paired with a layers of blankets, quilts and pillows, some I had and some new purchases. My favorite addition is Hearth & Hand’s black-and-white lumbar pillow from Target.
Other refreshes, some recent and some not-so-recent: We updated our bedside lights to simple white task lamps to keep the side tables clean and minimal and hung a basket pendant light in the center of the room. We also added a rod and beachy-linen curtains to our slider. Eventually, we’ll frame that window with trim.
Like all things here, this is a work-in-progress, but with a few intentional updates, it’s feeling more and more like ours. I’ll share sources soon, with more about my love for our new sheets. Also, soon: will share how we very minimally updated our tiny master bathroom, too!
